Pennyburn Credit Union School Quiz 2026

The Pennyburn Credit Union School Quiz is, without a doubt, one of our favourite events of the year and 2026 was no exception. From the second the kids came through the doors, the room was absolutely buzzing and the craic was mighty. Their giggles echoed, pencils were at the ready and their level of focus throughout the rounds would put us adults to shame!

The quiz took place on Friday 6th February at the White Horse Hotel and welcomed teams from seven local primary schools: Holy Family Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School, St Paul’s Primary School, Eglinton Primary School, Steelstown Primary School, St John’s Primary School and St Thérèse’s Primary School.

The quiz was split into two age groups, with Competition A for under 11’s and Competition B for under 13’s. Questions covered a huge mix of everything from geography and history to music, sport and Credit Union knowledge. Competition A faced a total of 10 rounds and Competition B faced a total of 12 rounds (an additional two rounds).

Teams rushed to find their seats, whispered last-minute strategies and got ready for the first question. As the quiz got underway the room filled with cheers, laughter and the occasional groan when a tricky question caught them out.

One of the standout moments of the afternoon came when the questions turned to Derry, especially anything to do with Derry City FC. The pupils were quick to show off their local knowledge, whispering the answers so no one else could hear and nudging each other with pure confidence.

Competition A ended dramatically with St Paul’s Primary School and Holy Family Primary School finishing with the exact same number of points after ten tough rounds. We then had no option but to go to a tie-breaker. After two incredibly tense tie-breaker rounds, that had us all on the edge of our seats, St Paul’s Primary School just edged ahead. Ryan, Lochlainn, Seamus and Sophie kept their cool under pressure and swooped in to claim first place – an incredible achievement!

In Competition B, St Patrick’s Primary School put in a strong and steady performance from start to finish. Darragh, Edith, Joe and Ben grew in confidence as the rounds went on and pulled ahead in the closing stages to comfortably secure a well-deserved win.

Winning teams were presented with medals, a trophy for their school and a voucher to mark their achievement. Every pupil also went home with a certificate and a snack pack as a thank you for taking part. A big thank you goes to The Trophy Cabin for supplying the trophies and medals, and to Peter, whose brilliant photography captured the day perfectly.

Days like this remind us why events like the School Quiz matter so much. Supporting young people, their schools and the wider community is at the heart of what we do, and we’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year. Huge thanks to all the schools and pupils for taking part in our Pennyburn Credit Union School Quiz 2026 – what a day we had!
